Its been quite interesting following the Scholars this season. A poor start to the season but starting to improve bit by bit. Saturday's match against Ware was disappointing though for a number of reasons. OK, the weather didn't help - torrential rain throughout - but it was the same for both sides. What football was played tended to come from the home side. If Potters Bar had a game plan it was to break down attacks and then hit the ball long into the wings for the forwards to chase, and then squeeze up as a unit. Problem was it didn't take Ware that long to work out that Potters had no plan B nor that the defensive line simply didn't squeeze up so when they lost the ball, they were back where they started. The conditions were difficult and the pitch heavy so it seemed logical to try and play the way your facing and find a short pass. Unfortunately, this didn't happen. Potters Bar have some very talented players and are a young side. Nonetheless, someone needs to tell them that you are also allowed to play down the left as well as the right and middle. With the two centre midfield players being right footed, they either played directly back, directly forward, or out to the right. I think the Ware right back must have had the easiest afternoon he'd enjoyed for weeks. 0-0 at half time and the second half continued where they left off in the first half. I counted 2 crosses in the entire 90 minutes from Potters Bar. The Ware keeper only had one real save to make in the entire game. At Ryman One North level, one might expect a bit more quality in the general play. Despite a couple of substitutions in the second half (including putting a right footed player on in the wide left midfield), there was no discerable change in the tactics. The only goal came from a corner and had one of the subs taken up the correct position on the post, the goal would not have probably been scored. Couldn't fault the effort, but very poor quality overall.

Vaio, it'll be interesting to see how Potters Bar bounce back from their Ware defeat.

The Scholars couldn't really have a tougher next match could they.

Brentwood at Parkfield I think will be a real test, any predictions about how the game will go?????

Strong rumour - unconfirmed. Steve Brown resigned after Saturday's defeat to Brentwood.

Well, I was right and I was wrong. Apparently Steve Brown did resign on Saturday and then did a u turn on Monday!! Got this from one of the players (wouldn't be right to name him). I also understand that several pl;ayers were told they were no longer needed so it looks like even more new faces coming in. I don't think, Tuesday night apart, that our form has been too bad of late given that we only lost to Brentwood and Ware by the odd goal. After the disappointment on Tuesday at leat we have an opportunity to stop the rot and get a result against a side that, on form, we should be capable of beating. But, as Ruud Gullit used to say, "the ball is round".

Just read your comments, really interesting!  Vaio you obviously understand the game to a certain extent, but which game were you watching, as there were a number of chances and half chances, notably Sammy Winston's. Reading your comments I think you should be in management as it is clear the management team don't have a plan B. Fascinating that since the manager has let certain players leave and certain players have not been selected the team has improved out of all recognition. As I will be at the Enfield game maybe you can make yourself known to me as I am always at the Bar at home games and as we have very few fans it would be nice to talk to someone with your vast knowledge. Can you let me know out of a matter of interest how many of those crosses came from the left hand side and in which half did they come?

Sorry, just got back from a long trip and catching up on emails etc. Well, you do have a plan 'B' after all! Walking out on the club is certainly an alternative to trying to get things right on the pitch. And I hear that 5 or 6 of the players have followed you to Enfield - presumably after more money that they were getting at Potters Bar. For what its worth, I don't think its relevant to state how many crosses from the right or left their were in the Ware game - or any subsequent game I saw. The fact remains that lumping the ball long and closing down is not much of tactic, nor pleasing on the eye. I was genuinly pleased for the team that they went on a 5 match run unbeaten - but apart from East Thurrock - who did they beat near the top? Can't count the Brentwood cup fixture at they put out mainly squad players with a few regulars. One encouraging point from last Tuesday and saturday's games respectively. The boys who were left played with a smile on their faces. After all, its just a gameand as Potters can't really think about play-offs or relegation, at least the new management team will start with a happy bunch of players - something you never managed to engender. I guess you'll stay at Enfield until the Manager gets sacked, take his place, sign loads of players and then move on again when things don't work out. And yes, I do have some experience and knowledge of the game .
